Children should have their first exam around age one, again before kindergarten, and annually through the school years.

Does the eye exam hurt?

No. A comprehensive exam at Focus Eye Center is comfortable throughout. We use non-contact tonometry (a brief puff of air) for eye pressure measurement, and our retinal imaging requires no contact with your eye. If we dilate your pupils, we use drops that take effect in about 20 minutes.

What is the difference between a vision screening and a comprehensive eye exam?

A vision screening — such as the one at a school or the DMV — only checks distance acuity. A comprehensive eye exam evaluates your complete eye health, full prescription, binocular vision, and screens for diseases like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and cataracts. Most serious eye conditions are only detectable with a comprehensive exam.

What should I bring to my eye exam?

Please bring your current glasses or contact lenses, your insurance card, and a list of any medications you take. If your pupils are dilated, driving can be difficult for a few hours — bringing sunglasses or arranging a ride is a good idea.
